There’s a new report out (released last week) from the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law that recommends you hire a lawyer to handle your foreclosure action.
Why would you?
Well, according to the report, there are six main reasons:

So do you agree that a lawyer is always necessary?
I don’t.
But I do think one is often very helpful and sometimes they become necessary. Of course, they also can be very expensive at a time when you’re trying to save every penny. In the end, it’s a judgment call on your part.
If you’d like to consult a lawyer but are worried about the cost. I’d recommend checking out the National Center for Consumer Law at http://www.nclc.org and the National Association of Consumer Advocates at http://www.naca.net for a ton of more info.
And try NACA’s find an attorney feature as well. You can find experienced lawyers all around the country that can help you with foreclosure, bankruptcy, or any other legal problem you may be going through. Some may even take your case on at no cost, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
I’d also recommend you check with your state attorney general’s office to see if there is are any pending cases you might be able to become part of. You never know, your report might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back and gets your attorney general to bring suit against a lender or scammer.
So while lawyers aren’t always necessary, they are often very helpful and definitely worth the money.
