I love this!!! Thank you for sharing!! And very well said. As a child I lived through some very traumatic events and apparently because I was 5 years old the adults thought I was blind and deaf so they lied right to my face. Not maliciously, just out of habit because it's how most people treat and/or think they are protecting children. What people fail to realize is that tactic just sets the children up to be hurt more because it's a surprise when the worst happens, especially since the whole world said "It will be ok. Nothing is wrong." As an adult I told them that I knew everything that was happening back then and that I remembered. I thanked them for trying to protect me but told them for future reference they may want to remember that children/pre-teens are simply people with a limited vocabulary but not limited intelligence. Kids are smart they just may not know all the words "bigger kids" (adults)use but if a situation is explained to them they will understand and not be taken by surprise when everything is not ok and something is wrong. You are an excellent mother, a wise woman, and great person that could turn a sassafras hut into a loving home, but oh how I wish, hope and pray that you get to keep the one you're in.
